September 2018  Successful transition to new updated ISO Standards

We have successfully transitioned to the new ISO Quality and Environment standards – 2015 versions. We are now certified to ISO 9001:2015 Quality and ISO 14001:2015 Environment.

ISO revised these two standards in 2015. The revised standards focus more on leadership and performance. They combine the process approach with risk-based thinking, and employing the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle at all levels in the organization.

Commenting on the transition to the updated standards, Leo McAuliffe explained: “This major ISO transition audit was very detailed and comprehensive. It allowed us to demonstrate to the ISO Auditor the continuous improvement we are making with our operating business system (Our SBS) to deliver high quality professional services to our Clients. The updated ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environment standards guide us on our service delivery and adding value.”

The ISO audit was carried out by the British Assessment Bureau in early September.

In addition to these two standards, we also have OHSAH 18001 Health & Safety; IIP Investors in People and Achilles (RISQS & UVB).

We remain committed to these ISO and industry standards to ensure we continue to develop, deliver and continuously improve our professional services to Clients satisfaction.

  Construction Sector Deal – digitally led, manufacturing focus & collaborative industry

The long awaited Construction Sector Deal, as part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, was officially launched in July. The Construction Sector Deal was trailed in the 2017 Autumn budget, then formally launched on 27 November 2017 in the Industrial Strategy: building a Britain fit for the future. The Construction Sector Deal was finally published on 5 July 2018.

Described as a ‘bytes and mortar revolution’ it is hoped the deal will transform construction through the use of innovative technologies, increasing productivity and delivering new homes faster and with less disruption.

The 48-page document details what the construction sector needs to do to achieve Government targets and what the Government will do to ‘help’. It aspires for a digitally led, manufacturing focused and collaborative industry.

Some of the sector deal targets include …

  • 33% reduction in the cost of construction and the whole-life cost of assets
  • 50% reduction in the time taken from inception to completion of new-build
  • 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment
  • 50% reduction in the trade gap between total exports and total imports of construction products and materials
  • 25,000 apprenticeship starts and 1,000 construction T-level placements

The deal is based on the five foundations of productivity outlined in the industrial strategy: Ideas, People, Infrastructure, Business environment and Places.

However, as Building Magazine rightly points out, ‘the deal is big on aspiration, but can it deliver?’. With Brexit needing to be resolved and major fundamental issues in the industry (low productivity, leadership & skills), the new Construction Sector Deal will be a challenge but there are signs of small changes.

  Important Message (spam eMails)

Recently we have experienced a number of incidents around eMail Security (spam mainly). Some of these emails contained threatening language – they are not from SCHOFIELD LOTHIAN – as we do not use threatening language in our eMails.

We sincerely apologies if you have received this type of eMail – it is spam eMail.

We are working with our IT Service Provider (Nasstar) to investigate what happened and put further steps in place to prevent this happening again.

Over the past year we have been updating and improving our internal operating processes. We recently launched these improvements to all staff.

Our SBS includes 14 processes we use to deliver our added value professional services to our Clients in the transport & infrastructure, property and energy market segments.

  • 4 operational processes … order acquisition, projects operational, projects financial, and projects completion
  • 5 support processes … human resources, IT, marketing, legal & admin, and finance
  • 5 accreditations & standards … ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environment, ISO 18001 Health & Safety, RISQS & UVDB, and IIP Investors in People

These processes, in addition to our company values, guide us on a day-to-day basis. They are also in alignment with the new ISO standards (9001 Quality, 14001 Environment & 18001 Health & Safety).

Jan 2018  Benefits of Practical Consenting Experience

Following on from Schofield Lothian’s presentation at the Planning Inspectorate’s knowledge hour on post DCO approval,  we had a very engaging discussion recently with Highways England. This focused on the benefits of practical consenting experience in delivering infrastructure projects being taken into account through the DCO process in order to give better surety on cost, programme and delivering the benefits.

The discussion touched on many aspects: flexibility and how this can be achieved through more considered drafting of the Order, challenging the Order limits, use of Rochdale envelope for the EIA and focusing requirements and protective provisions on managing effects rather than just recycling standard wording.

Dec 2017 Awarded IIP Silver Accreditation in People Management

Investors in People (IIP) have awarded Schofield Lothian the new Silver Level accreditation following a comprehensive audit process.

We are very proud to have been awarded the new Silver Level by Investors in People across the nine indicators within the new standard. IIP in their final assessment report noted: ‘the Schofield Lothian environment was very welcoming and people clearly take immense pride in the business … for an organisation going through the new wider IIP assessment process for the first time, this is an achievement that the whole team should be incredibly proud of’.

During the audit interviews, employees commented: “The Exec team are sincere in their approach to the business and their people and create an atmosphere of trust … When I joined Schofield Lothian I knew from the moment I walked through the door that I’d made the right choice … I get the best out of my team by taking the time to understand how each individual works”.
